Things to Do Near Salt Lake City Airport: Where to Eat, Drink and Ski

Snow-dusted Wasatch Mountains rising behind downtown Salt Lake City in early winter

TL;DR: what you need to know

•     Downtown is about 20 minutes from the airport on TRAX, and a one-way fare was listed at $2.50.

•     The airport's dining map lists more than 40 places to eat and drink, including five airside brewpubs.

•     The closest big ski resorts sit roughly 30 to 39 miles from the terminal. Alta, Solitude and Park City Mountain are projected to open November 20.

•     A four-hour layover leaves about 80 minutes downtown, so stash your bag and pick one thing.

•     We hold bags in airport lockers and deliver bags and skis to your hotel, as press coverage reported in 2026.

The best things to do near Salt Lake City Airport start with one number: how many hours you have. That number decides whether you eat in the terminal, ride TRAX downtown, or head for the snow.

Think of Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) as the hub of a bicycle wheel. Downtown, the museums, and the Cottonwood Canyon ski resorts are spokes, and each one costs a different amount of time.

Our view: pick one spoke, not three. A museum, a long lunch, and a canyon in the same gap is a good way to miss a flight.

We're Bringit, and we run luggage delivery from the airport We'll flag where bag help matters and where it doesn't.

What are the best things to do near Salt Lake City Airport? Eat local at the terminal or downtown, walk Temple Square, visit a free museum, or head for the slopes. Downtown is about 20 minutes away on TRAX, and the closest big resorts sit roughly 30 to 39 miles out. Pick one, because the clock runs out fast.

How much time do you have for things to do near Salt Lake City Airport?

The clock decides, so match your gap to a plan before you pick a place.

Your gap

Best move

Why it works

Under 4 hours

Stay airside and eat

Security, gate walks, and a train round trip eat the margin

4 to 7 hours

Ride TRAX downtown

About 20 minutes each way leaves room for a meal and Temple Square

8 hours or an overnight

Add a museum or a day on the snow

Canyon drives and gear need real slack

Here's the math we use. Chase's airport guide recommends arriving two hours before a domestic departure, and we'd keep that cushion even on a layover.

A four-hour gap minus that cushion leaves two hours. Take out 40 minutes of round-trip TRAX riding and you have about 80 minutes downtown, enough for a meal or a walk around Temple Square, not both.

Which restaurants near Salt Lake City Airport are worth your time?

The best places to eat near Salt Lake City Airport are inside it. The airport's dining map lists more than 40 places to eat and drink, by gate, in both concourses.

These are the ones we'd point a traveler to, using the airport's August 2026 map:

•     Concourse A: Squatters Pub Brewery (A20), White Horse Spirits and Kitchen (A25), Cafe Rio (A17), Beecher's Handmade Cheese (A6), and Millcreek Coffee Roasters (A45).

•     Concourse A Plaza: Market Street Grill, Roosters Brewing Co., and a food court with Shake Shack.

•     Concourse B: Uinta Brewing Company (B17), Gourmandise: Euro Diner and Bakery (B9), Maggiano's Little Italy (B21), and Moab Brewery (B31).

•     Before security: Blue Lemon, if you're meeting someone who can't go airside.

The final redevelopment phase was set to open on October 27, 2026, with six new concessions, per the airport's July release:

•     Einstein Bros. Bagels, Moochie's Cheesesteaks, Monarca, Mr. Charlie's Chicken Fingers, and Swig.

•     &Go SLC, a news and convenience store.

Where can you drink local before your flight?

Local beer is easy at SLC, because five brewpubs sit airside: Squatters (A20 and B3), Red Rock Brewing (A41), Uinta Brewing (B17), Moab Brewery (B31), and Roosters on the Concourse A Plaza.

White Horse Spirits and Kitchen (A25) covers the cocktail side. Gate numbers can shift with construction, so check the airport map once you're through security.

Is it worth leaving the airport to eat?

Yes, if you have four hours or more. Visit Utah's Salt Lake City restaurant guide names these spots, and hours change, so check each one before you ride:

•     Red Iguana: Mexican, known for mole enchiladas, at 736 W North Temple.

•     The Copper Onion: creative American, at 111 E Broadway.

•     Takashi: sushi with no reservations, at 18 W Market Street.

•     Caffe Molise: regional Italian in a historic building, at 404 S West Temple.

•     Squatters Pub Brewery: pub fare in the historic Salt Lake Brewing Company building, at 147 W Broadway.

If you only get one downtown meal, we'd start with Red Iguana, since mole enchiladas are the signature dish. Visit Utah highlights.

Which places to visit near SLC Airport fit a short trip?

Choose places to visit near SLC Airport by how far they pull you from the TRAX line. Two work on a layover, and three need more time or a car.

•     Temple Square: The grounds are open to the public from 7 AM to 10 PM, with free Tabernacle concerts. The renovated Salt Lake Temple stays closed until an April 2027 open house.

•     Clark Planetarium: Exhibit space is always free at The Gateway, open until 8 PM Sunday to Thursday and 11 PM Friday and Saturday. Dome and IMAX shows cost extra.

•     Natural History Museum of Utah: Open 10 AM to 5 PM daily, until 9 PM on Wednesdays, with adult tickets at $24.95. It sits on the University of Utah campus, so give it a longer stay.

•     City Creek Canyon: An easy 11.8-mile out-and-back from behind the Utah State Capitol, but access is very limited through January 2027 while a water plant is rebuilt. Check before you lace up.

•     Antelope Island State Park: About 41 miles north of Salt Lake City, with a $15 vehicle fee, beaches, and roughly 600 bison. You'll need a car and most of a day.

What are the best things to do during a Salt Lake City layover?

The best layover plan is simple: stash your bag, ride TRAX, and be back through security with a cushion. TRAX is the light rail run by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA), and it works like a conveyor belt from the terminal to downtown.

1.      Count your hours. Four is the floor for leaving the airport, as the table above shows.

2.      Stash the carry-on. We keep storage lockers inside the airport so you can explore between flights, as Deseret News reported. See our airport luggage storage page for current details.

3.      Board TRAX at door 1A. The station is on the ground level outside the terminal, on the east side, and a one-way fare was listed at $2.50.

4.      Ride about 20 minutes. Visit Salt Lake puts the trip at about 20 minutes from the airport to downtown, with Arena and Temple Square stations close to the action.

5.      Set an alarm for the return. Screening starts over when you re-enter the concourse, so leave at the time you planned, not the time you wanted.

Checked bags on a single ticket usually stay with the airline until your final stop. Ask your airline before you plan around them. Fares and schedules change, so confirm both with UTA.

Snowbasin is also set for November 27, and snow decides every date.

Which ski resorts near Salt Lake City open first this season?

Brian Head opens earliest in Utah, on November 6, but it isn't one of the ski resorts near Salt Lake City. Closer to the airport, Alta, Solitude and Park City Mountain lead on November 20.

Expect longer drives than the mileage suggests. Alta runs about 45 minutes in ideal conditions, Park City Mountain typically 40 to 50 minutes, and avalanche closures in Little Cottonwood Canyon can stretch the Alta and Snowbird trips.

How do you get from the airport to the slopes?

You have three real options, and gear decides which one wins:

•     Rental car: Most flexible, but the Cottonwood canyons enforce traction rules (think of them as a dress code for tires). UDOT requires at least 5/32 inch of tread plus M+S or snow-rated tires when the beacons flash, and officers can turn vehicles back at checkpoints. Ask your rental company about AWD or 4WD.

•     UTA ski bus: A one-way ride costs $5, and service typically starts in late November or early December. Visit Utah's guide describes a Green Line to Blue Line transfer, then bus Route 953 for Snowbird and Alta or Route 972 for Solitude and Brighton. That guide dates from 2022, so confirm routes with UTA.

•     Shuttle: Many shuttle services serve the airport and run up the canyons, a fit for people who don't want to carry skis on the train.

That last point is the catch with transit. Riding TRAX means carrying your own equipment, which is why skis are the awkward part of a short ski trip.

How can luggage delivery help on a layover or a ski trip?

Luggage delivery moves your bags between Salt Lake City International Airport and your hotel while you do something else. Think of it as a bag valet that works across town.

We launched in February 2026 under a contract with the airport, per Deseret News. Here's where we fit:

•     Layover: Hold the carry-on in an airport locker, ride TRAX, and collect it on the way back.

•     Short trip with checked bags: Book delivery to your hotel and skip baggage claim, since your flight number connects to flight data.

•     Ski trip: Have bags and skis delivered to a Salt Lake or Park City hotel. FOX 13 reported that we move heavy sports gear such as skis, and our ski and golf gear delivery page covers the details.

Standard delivery was reported at $37 for up to two bags within 30 miles of the airport, with $1 more per extra mile, in Park Record coverage. Delivery lands within four hours of collection, per FOX 13.

We serve Salt Lake County and Summit County, per our launch announcement, so see our Park City luggage delivery page if your hotel is on the mountain.

Now the honest part. If you're renting a car and driving straight to the slopes with your gear, a rental car and a ski bag are simpler than us. Ask for a quote before you count on a ski bag, because that coverage lists no size limits.

What is the bottom line on things to do near Salt Lake City Airport?

Match the plan to the clock, then match the bags to the plan.

•     Prioritize the terminal if you have under four hours, and eat at the airside brewpubs.

•     Prioritize TRAX downtown if you have four to seven hours and a carry-on you can stash.

•     Prioritize the slopes only with a long gap or an overnight, and check traction rules and opening dates first.

Hours, fares and opening dates change. As of October 27, 2026, every figure here comes from the sources linked in this post. See rates and what's included before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Salt Lake City Airport from downtown?

About 20 minutes on TRAX, per Visit Salt Lake. The Green Line runs from the airport to downtown, with Arena and Temple Square stations half a block from the Salt Palace Convention Center. Driving is usually quicker but depends on traffic. Check UTA for current schedules and fares before you ride.

Can you leave Salt Lake City Airport during a layover?

Yes, but plan to clear security again on your way back. We'd want at least four hours, which leaves about 80 minutes downtown after a two-hour cushion and a TRAX round trip. Carry-on bags can wait in airport lockers, per Deseret News. Ask your airline whether checked bags are tagged through to your final stop.

How much does TRAX cost from Salt Lake City Airport?

The airport lists a one-way fare of $2.50, and Visit Salt Lake says the same for rides to downtown, with cash or cards accepted at platform kiosks. Board on the ground level outside the terminal on the east side, by door 1A. Fares can change, so confirm on UTA's site.

Do you need a rental car to ski near Salt Lake City?

No. UTA ski buses serve Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude, Snowbasin, Powder Mountain and Sundance for $5 one way, typically from late November or early December. A rental car gives more freedom, but canyon traction rules apply: UDOT requires 5/32 inch of tread and M+S or snow tires when the beacons flash.

When do ski resorts near Salt Lake City open this season?

Deseret News reported projected openings on October 7, 2026: Alta, Solitude and Park City Mountain on November 20, Snowbird and Snowbasin on November 27, and Deer Valley on December 5. Ski Utah listed Brighton as to be announced on October 6. Snow decides, so check each resort before you book.

Can skis go through luggage delivery?

Yes. We move heavy sports gear such as skis, mountain bikes and golf clubs, per FOX 13, plus strollers and car seats. The coverage lists no size limits or separate pricing, so ask for a quote and confirm ski bag dimensions first. Standard delivery is $37 for up to two bags within 30 miles of the airport.

Is there luggage storage at Salt Lake City Airport?

Yes, in the form of lockers. Deseret News reported that we offer storage lockers inside the airport so travelers can explore between flights, and bags can stay for several days. Pricing and the exact locker location weren't published in that coverage, so check our site for current details before you travel.
